Known as the Gateway to Teesdale, Barnard Castle is one of the most historically and architecturally important
towns in Great Britain. This friendly market town offers both the traditional with small specialist shops and inns
through to many of the well-known high street chains.
County Durham is often described as one of the most beautiful counties in England. From its western boundary
high in the Pennine Hills to the limestone cliffs of its North Sea coastline, this corner of England has a rich
heritage with a wealth of interesting attractions and activities close at hand and so much variety. The county
is also an excellent touring base for Northumberland, the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and the Scottish
Borders.
The fantastic Bowes Museum is directly opposite River View Park on the opposite bank of the river Tees. This
magnificent French style chateau houses a great collection of treasures, fine art, furniture, ceramics and glass.
The gardens are equally spectacular to match this amazing building. If you fancy a more active day out the
nearby Hamsterley Forest provides many opportunities for outdoor activities with forest walks,
nature trails, orienteering courses and mountain bike routes. Thorpe Farm has something for young and old
alike, from falconry, a 5 acre maze, adventure playgrounds to gift shops and a restaurant. There’s a host of
